At Ship Monitor by JDS, we have always believed that groundbreaking ideas don’t care about hierarchy. Innovation can come from anyone, anywhere in the company, as long as the environment is right. This belief was put in the spotlight recently when our colleague, Florian Ludwig, took the stage in Bremen to receive the prestigious MCN Junior Cup.

Organized by the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (Maritimes Cluster Norddeutschland - MCN), the MCN Cup celebrates outstanding, sustainable maritime innovations across the North. While established maritime giants and research institutes competed in categories like "Product" and "Project", Florian took home the top prize in the MCN Junior Cup (Thesis) category - a testament to what happens when raw talent meets a supportive, forward-thinking company culture.

The Innovation: Seeing the Invisible

Florian, who recently completed his training as a Fachinformatiker (IT Specialist for Application Development) at Ship Monitor by JDS and now works with us as a Fullstack Developer, won the award for his phenomenal final thesis: “AIS-backed Environmental Research and Maritime Surveillance for Greater Maritime Safety – Development of an Autonomous Sensor Station to Analyze the Environmental Impacts of Shipping.”

In simple terms, Florian designed and developed an autonomous, affordable sensor station that bridges two previously separate worlds: real-time environmental telemetry and maritime traffic tracking.

The station measures localized environmental data - such as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric CO2​ concentrations - and pairs it instantly with Automatic Identification System (AIS) data broadcasted by nearby vessels.

By cross-referencing a sudden spike in carbon dioxide with live vessel positions, the station provides undeniable data on exactly how shipping traffic impacts local environments. If a massive cruise ship or container vessel sails past, the station registers the immediate environmental footprint.

Going the Extra Mile: Driven by Purpose

What makes this project truly incredible is its scope and ambition. Florian didn’t just write a theoretical paper to pass his exams; he built a fully functional, self-sustaining ecosystem designed to solve real-world problems.

"The topic highly motivated me because, alongside the technical challenge, it offered the opportunity to create something truly meaningful for the environment and society," Florian shared in a recent interview with the MCN.

To ensure the station could operate anywhere—even in remote areas without infrastructure - Florian engineered it to be completely power-autonomous. Our ongoing test station in Warnemünde runs entirely on solar modules feeding a 12V AGM battery. Despite having a landline backup, the station has run stably for months purely on green solar energy, continuously harvesting data.

Furthermore, while the European test units transmit data via standard cellular networks, Florian looked far ahead to a planned deployment in Namibia. Because cellular coverage can be sparse in developing coastal regions, he went the extra mile to research and test compact satellite communication solutions via Starlink. This setup not only makes global deployment possible but can also serve as a failsafe backup for our European operations.

It Takes a Village: Team Spirit at Ship Monitor by JDS

While Florian’s dedication, late nights, and coding expertise were the engine of this project, the initial spark came from the unique team spirit we foster here at Ship Monitor by JDS.

Our core expertise revolves around capturing, processing, and routing complex maritime data. The abstract idea of an autonomous environmental sensor station had been floating around our team for a while. Instead of keeping the concept locked away in a drawer or reserving it for senior engineers, our team recognized the perfect opportunity to let a rising talent shine.

"The impulse came from the team," Florian explains. "We were convinced that this would be a perfect project for a final thesis. So, I just got to work."

This is the essence of our company culture. We don’t just train apprentices to execute tasks, we empower them to take ownership of genuine innovations. From day one, Florian had access to the collective knowledge of our senior developers, our existing cloud infrastructure, and a team that cheered him on through every trial and hardware iteration.

Innovation cannot thrive in a vacuum. It requires an environment where failure is treated as a learning step, where resources are readily shared, and where a junior team member’s passion is met with genuine enthusiasm from management and peers alike. Our team spirit gave Florian the runway, and his incredible work ethic did the rest.

Beyond the trophy and the well-deserved applause in Bremen, this project carries a vital mission. Because Florian’s sensor station is remarkably cost-effective compared to traditional, industrial-grade monitoring setups, it opens the door for developing nations to actively participate in maritime environmental research.

By providing affordable, reliable data, we aim to empower our international partners and environmental agencies to make data-driven decisions for a greener future.
